Synopsis
In the summer of 1949, Thomas Mann and his daughter Erika set off by car across a ruined Germany, from Frankfurt to Weimar. Having returned to his homeland after sixteen years of exile in the United States, Mann has to grapple with not only a divided nation but also a deep rift in his own family.
COMMENTARY
Paweł Pawlikowski picks up where he left off with his award-winning Ida and Cold War, using his concise, elliptical style to explore themes of identity, family, love and guilt against the backdrop of the turmoil and moral confusion of post-war Europe.
DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
Fatherland embraces many themes, yet it chooses to recount them in a simple and essential way, through graphic images and brief, incisive scenes. A language that leaves the audience space to feel, interpret and imagine.
