World War II. In the chaos that followed the armistice, the German troops conduct harsh round-ups, and even Matera and Potenza are occupied. As Italy seems to be verging on collapse, in the midst of confused and contradictory orders, a mysterious woman in furs is on the run to reach freedom. The only way she can avoid being arrested is to take the longest road through the woods. To bring her to safety, the resistance commando entrusts her to an expert guide, Nichi, who has been arrested many times by the militia but has always escaped death, as she searches for her husband who is still at war. But the lady conceals a secret: a notebook, a diary that she hopes to trade for her freedom. On the first page, Nichi reads a single name: Edda Ciano.
