Synopsis
Twenty years ago, an incident tore the Dyer family apart – an incident named Andy.
Andy is the reason world-famous author Andrew, better known to readers as the reclusive A.N. Dyer, no longer speaks to his adult sons, Richard and Jamie, nor his ex-wife, Isabel. Now, feeling his time on Earth is running out, he summons his sons to be with him. When they arrive, he tells them something so unbelievable it couldn’t possibly be true. Or could it?
COMMENTARY
The first English-language film by Argentine filmmaker Pablo Trapero, who co-wrote it with Sarah Polley, offers up an unflinching and at times ironic look at family ties and the unwieldy legacies of pain that parents often hand down to their children.
DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
On the surface, & Sons is the story of a writer coming to terms with the major decisions he’s made — and the consequences they’ve left behind. But at its core, it’s a deeply relatable exploration of legacy, family, identity, vanity, exploitation, and, of course, love. It’s told with a layer of irony woven in — a snapshot of ordinary lives suddenly upended by something that feels like surrealist fiction. & Sons taps into themes I’ve been exploring since I started out: the inherent tension and friction in our relationships — whether with friends, work, or family. I see & Sons as a universal story – one that resonates across borders and generations.
