Festa del cinema
Synopsis
Three weeks that changed the history of film. This is the story of Jean-Luc Godard’s making of Breathless, told in the style and bold and free spirit of the legendary French filmmaker.
COMMENTARY
1959: Jean-Luc Godard is shooting Breathless on the streets of Paris, with the young diva of the boyish haircut just in from America, and the 26-year-old actor and boxing fan who will soon be a star. Jean Seberg, Jean-Paul Belmondo, and Melville, Chabrol, Coutard, Truffaut, the “fathers” Bresson and Rossellini, and all the others who created the New Wave and the film that was its manifesto: in the cafés, on the streets, in the apartments, the film camera mirrors the moves of the one in the original film.
DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
This is not about remaking Breathless, but looking at it from another angle. I want to dive into 1959 with my camera and recreate the era, the people, the atmosphere. I want to hang out with the New Wave crowd. I told all the actors: “You are NOT making a period film. You are living in the moment. Godard is a well-known critic, but he’s a first-time director. You’re having fun shooting with him, but you’re wondering if this film will ever be released…”
