Festa del cinema
Synopsis
In as few as three days, Nino will face a major unusual challenge. But before then, the medical team responsible for his care has assigned him two vitally important tasks, two “missions” that will lead the young man on a journey from one end of Paris to the other, compelling him to reconnect with the world - and himself.
COMMENTARY
Despite the subject, the film has the levity of youth, veined with melancholy and a subtle underground humour. This is not a film about illness, but about self-searching and friendship.
DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
This film is dedicated to Romain, a close relative who died of cancer at the age of 37. When this happened, I was overcome with immense sadness and a deep sense of injustice; I began to write and Nino’s character came to me by chance, as if I’d bumped into a young guy on the street, who showed me the path his journey would take. The narrative spans the few days that precede the beginning of his cancer treatment: I was interested in this timeframe consisting of wait times and downtimes, more rarely depicted than the direct experience of the illness. I wanted to delve into the triviality and reality of everyday life, which is both funny and tragic at the same time.
Director
Pauline Loquès
The French filmmaker Pauline Loquès, who studied literature and the law in her youth, worked as a journalist and editor for cultural programmes before going back to study screenwriting. Her directorial debut, the 2018 short film La vie de jeune fille, was crafted with simplicity, authorial honesty and a sense of authenticity. This is the spirit with which she also directed Nino, her first feature film.
