Synopsis
On an empty road in the middle of the night, Shula stumbles across the body of her uncle. During the funeral, she and her cousins bring to light the buried secrets of their middle-class Zambian family.

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
In my tribe, we believe when someone dies, everything dies with them. Our funerals are for the living. They're not for the dead. It is also taboo to speak ill of the dead. I think you find that in most cultures. So whatever beef you had with the dead person, that's gone and buried with them.

Rungano Nyoni
Rungano Nyoni is a self-taught writer/director. She was born in Lusaka, Zambia, and grew up in Wales in the UK. Rungano’s debut feature I Am Not a Witch follows an eight-year-old girl who is exiled to a witch camp. On Becoming a Guinea Fowl premiered at Cannes and was nominated for numerous international awards, earning her the Best Director Award in Un Certain Regard.
