Synopsis
Sandra, Samuel, and their eleven-year-old son Daniel have been living in the mountains for a year, cut off from the world. One day Samuel is found dead in front of the house, and, although doubts linger, an investigation leads to Sandra being charged with the crime. One year later, Daniel, who is blind, is a witness at his mother’s trial.
COMMENTARY
The film goes back and forth between the past and the witnesses at the wife’s trial, for she is suspected of killing her husband in this new woman’s tale from Justine Triet, after her earlier films In Bed with Victoria, Age of Panic, and Sibyl. The feeling of foreignness reigns (the wife is German, the couple met in London) in this three-language film, half-dissection of a family, half-courtroom drama. Winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes 2023 and the Palm Dog for Messi, the border collie playing Snoop, the son’s guide dog.
DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
I wanted to make a film about the defeat of a couple. This couple has a son who learns of his parents’ past during a trial – a trial that methodically breaks down their relationship – and the boy abruptly exits childhood, a time when he trusted his mother completely, and enters the stage of doubt.
Director
Justine Triet
Born in France in 1978, Justine Triet directed several documentaries before turning to narrative features, first directing the short film Two Ships, then the feature film Age of Panic, followed by In Bed with Victoria (the opening film at the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes 2016), Sibyl, and Anatomy of a Fall, winner of the 2023 Palme d’Or.
