Synopsis
1885. Eugénie has been working as a cook for the famous chef Dodin for twenty years. Their close working relationship has long turned into something else, but Eugénie loves her freedom and has never wanted to marry Dodin. To persuade her, he decides to try something totally new: cooking for her.
COMMENTARY
Tràn Anh Hùng (the Franco-Vietnamese director of The Scent of Green Papaya, Cyclo, and Norwegian Wood) conveys the carnal and spiritual passion kindled by the cuisine through a sinuous participation in the rituals of the couple Juliette Binoche and Benoît Magimel. A love letter to cooking, love, and love of France, its culture, countryside, its colors and painters. Inspired by the novel The Passionate Epicure (and by gastronome Brillat-Savarin) and winner of the Best Director Award at Cannes 2023.
DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
Gastronomy focuses on a sense foreign to the other arts: taste. A gastronomic artist can differentiate between flavors that we are unable to distinguish so precisely; to blend, measure, balance flavors, scents, textures, consistencies, and temperatures… It is a science, like the cinema…
