Synopsis
Using a rare audio recording of Jean Gili interviewing Valerio Zurlini as a starting point, Sandra Marti’s documentary renders the profound nature of the work of an important filmmaker, today largely forgotten. He was an extraordinary director of actors and a profound connoisseur of Italian figurative art, a scholar of artists such as Morandi and Balthus, who managed to portray the malaise of Europe as it moved on, carrying its wounds, from two world wars. Forgotten in Italy, better well remembered in France, loved by cinephiles and directors, such as Marco Tullio Giordana, Zurlini represented a unique figure in the Italian cinema of the golden age by remaining outside of commercially successfully genres over the span of his short life: he died at the age of fifty six. Zurlini made only eight films, always faithful to his personal poetics that led him to not accept compromises and to leave many projects unfinished.
Introduced by Sandra Marti e Jean Gili.
